OUTBREAK NEWS Pertussis, Afghanistan update 1 Following the previous report of an outbreak of pertussis in Afghanistan, an emergency team of health officials from the United Na tions, WHO and the Afghan Ministry of Health have been working in the Khwahan and Darwaz districts giving the antibiotic, erythromycin, to those people who are not immunized against pertussis. The team is implementing a 10 day treatment regimen of erythromycin to all children under 15 years of age in 5 affected subdistricts. Thirty-nine 2-person teams are treating 100 children each day in 189 villages. ■
LE POINT SUR LES ÉPIDÉMIES Coqueluche, Afghanistan - mise àjou r 1 Suite au précédent rapport signalant une flam bée de coqueluche en Afghanistan, une équipe d’urgence composée de représentants médicaux officiels des Nations Unies, de TOMS et du Minis tère de la santé afghan ont travaillé dans les dis tricts de Khwahan et Darwaz, distribuant des antibiotiques et de Térythromicine aux person nes qui ne sont pas vaccinées contre la coquelu che. L ’équipe est en train de mettre en place un traitement de 10 jours à base d’érythromicine pour les enfants de moins de 15 ans vivant dans les 5 sous-districts touchés. Yellow fever, Brazil The Brazilian Ministry of Health has re ported 24 cases and 5 deaths from sylvatic yel low fever in Minas Gerais state. All cases, of which 4 have been laboratory confirmed, have occurred in a localized rural area. Teams from the Ministry of Health and the Minas Gerais state health department are investigat ing this outbreak. A vaccination campaign has already started. The WHO Regional Office for the Americas (PAHO) is following the out break closely and is in regular communica tion with the Ministry of Health.
Fièvre jaune, Brésil Le Ministère de la santé brésilien a signalé 24 cas de fièvre jaune sylvatique et 5 décès dans l’état du Minas Gerais. Tous les cas, parmi lesquels 4 ont été confirmés en laboratoire, se sont déclarés dans une région rurale localisée. Des équipes du Ministère de la santé et du département sanitaire de l’état du Minas Gerais sont en train d’enquêter sur cette flambée. Une campagne de vaccination a déjà commencé. Le bureau régional de TOMS aux Amériques (PAHO) suit cette flambée de près et est en contact régulier avec le Ministère de la santé.
