SURVEILLANCE OF LEGIONNAIRES’ DISEASE U n it e d K in g d o m . — There have been 66 cases o f Legionnaires’ disease (LD) identified in England and Wales since mid-1977.* 1 • * Twelve of these had developed the illness during or shortly after being on holiday abroad.9 An investigation o f all suspected cases and ten confirmed cases which had been reported between August and mid-October 1978 did not reveal evidence of an outbreak of the disease associated with any particular hotel in any one country. F o u r of the confirmed cases had been on holiday in European countries but the remaining six had not recently been out of the U nited Kingdom. I t was felt however that the diagnosis of LD should be considered in patients who develop pneumonia shortly after returning from holidays abroad. The incubation period ranges between two and ten days and the source is environmental. Case to case spread is excessively rare and there is no indication for the investigation of healthy travellers or contacts of cases. 1 See N o. 30, 1978, pp. 226-227, • See N o. 34, 1977, p. 282.

SURVEILLANCE DE LA MALADIE DE V AM ERIC AN LEGION R o y a u m e -U n i . 1 Voir N» 30, 1978, pp. 226-227. * Voir N" 34, 1977, p. 282.
