ACQUIRED IMMUNODEFICIENCY SYNDROME (AIDS) HIV infections, 1989 T u n is ia . — In 1 9 8 9 , 2 6 new cases of HIV-1 infection were reported to the Ministry of Public Health, including 14 cases of AIDS, 9 cases of AIDS-related complex (ARC) and 3 cases of asymptomatic HIV-1 infection. This brings the total number of cases of HIV-1 infection detected in Tunisia since 1985'to 160, distributed according to the clinical stages and-transmission groups shown in Table 1. It should be pointed out that 33 AIDS patients have died, including 11 (33%) in 1989. •

SYNDROME D’IMMUNODÉFICIENCE ACQUISE (SIDA) Infections à VIH, 1989 T u n is ie . — Au cours de l’année 1989, 26 nouveaux cas d’infection à VIH-1 ont été notifiés au Ministère de la Santé publique, dont 14 cas de SIDA, 9 cas de para-SIDA (ARC) et 3 porteurs asymptomauques de VIH-1. Ainsi, le cumul des cas d’infection à VIH-l dépistés en Tunisie depuis 1985 est de 160 cas, répartis selon les stades cliniques et les groupes de transmission indiqués au Tableau 1. Il est à noter que 33 sidéens sont décédés, dont 11 (33% ) durant l’année 1989.

Although the largest number of infections continued to be reported among Tunisian expatriates, it is important to note that thenum ber of Tunisians infected in Tunisia (local transmission) is increasing steadily and now accounts for 18.7% of all case reports, which suggests that the virus is beginning to spread among the general population. The distribution of cases by place of permanent residence is shown in Table 2.

Bien que le plus grand nombre d ’infections continue d’être enregistré parmi les Tunisiens émigrés, il est important d’attirer l’attention sur le nombre sans cesse croissant de Tunisiens infectés en Tunisie (transmis­ sion locale), atteignant actuellement 18,7% du total des cas enregistrés, ce qui témoignerait d’un début d’expansion du virus dans la population générale. . . , La distribution des cas selon leur lieu de résidence permanente est représetuée au Tableau Z

With regard to the distribution of cases by age and by sex, attention should be drawn to the predominance of infection among young adult males (52.5% of the cases are between 20 and 34 years of age; male/female ratio = 5.3).

Quant à la répartition des cas par âge et par sexe, on note une pré­ dominance de l’infection chez les jeunes adultes (52,5% des cas sont âgés de 20 à 34 ans) de sexe masculin (rapport de masculinité = 5,3).
