Environmentally sustainable urban transport can have many health, social, environmental, cultural and economic benefits for communities and countries. It thereby not only contributes to the implementation and achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, but also to meeting the commitment made by Member States of the WHO European Region in the Ostrava Declaration (2017), to support “the efforts of European cities and regions to become healthier and more inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable”. 2. This event will highlight the synergies and opportunities that result from intersectoral action involving transport and urban planning, health promotion and protection, environmental quality and economic development. In particular, it will illustrate the role played by the WHO/UNECE Transport, Health and Environment Pan-European Programme (THE PEP) as a policy framework that fosters partnerships across sectors and actors. 3. The event will also raise awareness and encourage active engagement, particularly by ministries of health, in the preparations for the fifth High-level Meeting on Transport, Health and Environment, which will take place in Vienna, Austria, on 22–24 October 2019.
