EXECUTIVE SUMMARY A Rapid Epidemiological Assessment of Onchocerciasis was carried out in Tunduru District from 25h January to 8 February 2002 inorder to determine the prevalence of the disease in those areas not covered during the initial survey done in 1993 by River Blindness Foundation. The REA exercise covered 8 villages in 4 divisions in Tunduru district. Data collected from a cross section of a village population included community members in the village aged 20 years and above who have lived in that community for not less than l0 years consecutively. The size of the sample group was 30 adult males and females. It should be noted that in our rural seffings in Tanzania females work in the fields longer hours than men and that's why they were included in our study sample. The major finding in Tunduru district is that the prevalence of onchocerciasis in the 4 divisions ranges from 27Vo to 600/o. AII the 8 sentinel villages were found to be either hyper or meso endemic giving an additional number of 24 villages (including surrounding villages) with Onchocerciasis. The last REA survey done in 1993 identified 31 villages with a prevalence of Onchocerciasis ranging fro 20o/o to 77o . Following this survey Tunduru now has a total number of 55 hyper and meso endemic communities. Accurate population figures will be obtained after a census by the communities is conducted just before Mectizan Distribution this year. In this survey we received maximum cooperation from the district authorities and the community in general. (Dk -o os2coi.bo'= -'!
