WEEKLY EPIDEMIOLOGICAL RECORD, No. 15, 11 APRIL 1997 • RELEVÉ ÉPIDÉMIOLOGIQUE HEBDOMADAIRE, N o 15, 11 AVRIL 1997

Influenza Bulgaria (16 March 1997). Morbidity from acute respiratory infections, which started to increase during January, was declining in the last week of February and first week of March. Influenza A(H3N2) virus was isolated during an outbreak among children in January and it was also the main influenza type diagnosed serologically during the season. Canada (4 April 1997).1 The second wave of influenza activity, which started in the last 2 weeks of February, began to decline in mid-March. It was associated with influenza B virus diagnoses which reached a peak in early March. Germany (2 April 1997).1 The incidence of acute respiratory infections continued to decrease overall in March, except for a few regions where morbidity among children under 16 years of age remained elevated. Most of the influenza viruses isolated during March were influenza B, but some influenza A virus isolates of H1N1 and H3N2 subtypes were also reported. Hungary (14 March 1997).2 Influenza activity has continued to decrease. During the 6 weeks of the epidemic, 2.8% of the population contacted physicians because of influenza-like illness. In addition to previously reported cases of influenza A(H3N2) and influenza B, influenza A(H1N1) was confirmed in a hospitalized patient in the southern part of the country in February. Malaysia. Influenza A virus was isolated from a few cases in November, December and January, and influenza B virus from 2 cases in November. Norway (27 March 1997).3 The incidence rate of influenza-like illness has fallen below 100 per 100 000 population in almost all counties. The epidemic, which started in the second week of January, reached a peak at the end of that month and was considered over by the first week of March. It was characterized by co-circulation of influenza A(H3N2) and influenza B viruses. The reported number of cases of influenza-like illness was comparable to that of the preceding 2 seasons. 1 2

Grippe Bulgarie (16 mars 1997). Voir No 10, 1997, p. 71.
