SURVEILLANCE OF MUMPS — A review of mumps epidemiology was carried out in Israel to assist decision makers concerning the inclusion of vaccina tion against mumps in the national immunization programme. Data from several sources from 1960 to 1977 revealed that epidemic waves occur every four to five years. The attack rate varied from around 270 cases per 10 000 inhabitants in 1975, which was a year with low incidence, to over 1 600 cases per 10 000 inhabitants in 1963, a peak year. The monthly distribution of cases notified from 1967 to 1976 showed an increase in incidence from February on wards and a decrease in July. Almost 60 % of all cases were report ed from February to June and almost 75 % of all cases were children in the age group 1-9, while children between ten and 14 years of age accounted for 16 %. N o significant sex difference could be detected in the various age groups for mumps cases reported between 1974 and 1976.

Hospital admission data from 1968 to 1972 indicated involvement of the central nervous system (CNS) (encephalitis, meningitis) or glands (parotitis, orchitis, pancreatitis) as the major cause for hospitalization. About 65% of the admissions o f children below 14 years o f age was for CNS diseases, while in the age groups over 14, 90% were admitted for glandular disease. Cases of meningo encephalitis showed a significant male dominance, particularly in the age group 1-9. In spite o f the high frequency o f the disease and the high rate o f CNS complications, the number o f deaths and the case-fatality rate were low: a total of eight deaths were recorded for over 290 000 cases between 1963 and 1975.
