WHO's role in the development and coordination of biomedical research : greater involvement of the regions in research (Resolution)

REPORT OF THE REGIONAL COMMITTEE 33 Recognizing the increasing threat to life and health caused by road traffic accidents and the need to intensify WHO collaboration in the prevention of such accidents; 1. URGES Member States: (1) to collaborate in the development of national road safety programmes; (2) to develop measures for preventing traffic accidents and reducing their consequences, such as disability, loss of life expectancy and reduced productivity; 2. REQUESTS the Regional Director: (1) to collect and collate available information from Member States of the Region on the incidence and severity of traffic accidents, as well as on resources being utilized in national road safety programmes; (2) to pursue analysis of the situation by other means considered ~ppropriate; (3) to collaborate with Member States on request in establishing projects within the framework of the WHO global programme on prevention of road traffic accidents, including the possibility of establishing a multidisciplinary pilot study in the Western Pacific Region. WPR/RC28.R15 Sixth meeting, 12 September 1977 WHO'S ROLE IN THE DEVELOPMENT AND COORDINATION OF BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH: GREATER INVOLVEMENT OF THE REGIONS IN RESEARCH The Regional Committee, Having considered the Regional Director's progress report on the greater involvement of the Western Pacific Region in the development and coordination of biomedical research,l 1. THANKS the Regional Director for his report; 2. NOTES with satisfaction: (1) that a medical officer for research promotion and development has been appointed in the Regional Office; ~ocument WPR/RC28/9 and Corr.l. 34 REGIONAL COMMITTEE: TWENTY EIGHTH SESSION (2) the activities of the task forces of the Regional Advisory Committee on Medical Research; (3) the inclusion of research promotion and development as one of the priority areas in the Sixth General Programme of Work covering a specific period (1978-83); (4) the background data and information provided on the objectives, approaches and strategies for promotion and development of a research programme in the Region; (5) the efforts made by the Regional Director to secure extra-budgetary funds for promotion and development of research in the Region; Realizing that implementation depends on the availability of additional funds; 3. ENDORSES the recommendations of the Regional Advisory Committee on Medical Research which include: (1) a plan to strengthen the Institute for Medical Research, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; (2) establishment of a regional multidisciplinary research programme on schistosomiasis; (3) organization in 1978 of a workshop on health services research and a training course on the epidemiology of cardiovascular diseases; 4. REQUESTS the Regional Director: (1) to take the necessary steps, as far as funds become available, to implement the above-mentioned recommendations; (2) to continue approaching Member States, foundations and voluntary agenCies for contributions to help in financing research promotion and development activities; (3) to report to the Regional Committee at its next session on the progress made; 5. AUTHORIZES the Regional Director, should voluntary funds be forthcoming, to allocate them to research activities as he considers appropriate after obtaining the concurrence of the Regional Advisory Committee on Medical Research, reporting on their use to the subsequent session of the Regional Committee; 6. REQUESTS Member States and voluntary agencies to make funds and other forms of cooperation available for research activities in the Region. Sixth meeting, 12 September 1977 ,..
