^-LACTAMASE PRODUCING STRAINS OF HAEMOPHILUS INFLUENZAE U nited K ingdom — Since October 1979 eight children aged less than three years with invasive Haemophilus influenzae infections have been admitted to a hospital in Suffolk (3 had meningitis, 2 bacteraemia, 2 epiglottitis and 1 septic arthritis). All strains were tested fbr jS-lactamase production a n d half were positive. In contrast to the low level o f ampicillin-resistance reported in the UK several centres in the USA report that about 30% of strains of H. influenzae type b are resistant to ampicillin. The Communicable Dis ease Surveillance Centre (London) would be grateful for information on ^-lactamase production by strains of H. influenzae; this should be included when isolates from blood, CSF or joint aspirates are reported for the Communicable Disease Report.
