PESTE E tats-U nis d ’A mérique.

PLAGUE U nited States of A merica. — A case of presumptive plague has been reported in a 20-year-old woman in Placitas, New Mexico, who lived in the same “hippie colony” as a confirmed case occurring on 15 June 1969.1 The woman was hospitalized on 3 June, with chills, fever, malaise, diarrhea, and an axillary mass; she responded to antibiotic treatment and was discharged on 11 June without a diagnosis of plague. Plague was retrospectively diagnosed during a serologic survey of colony members following the confirmed case on 15 June. The woman had a positive agglutination titer sugges tive of plague; however, no tissue was then available for diagnostic confirmation. This woman as well as the other 22 members of the colony had direct contact with the confirmed case and with a cat belonging to the colony that frequently brought dead rodents into the tent compound. The cat had an agglutination titer of 1:256 to plague.
