The sex distribution of the cases was 123 males, 161 females and four in which the sex was not specified. According to the results of 249 inquiries received to date, 161 cases, or 65 % were in the age group 65 years and over. Of the 89 deaths concerning which information is available at the moment, only two of the persons concerned had been vaccinated (about 35 years before), the others had never been vaccinated against tetanus. In 257 patients, the portal of entry was investigated: in 171 cases (67%), it was through slight injuries (scratches, pricks by thorns and nails, excoriations and grazes); in 35 cases, or 13%, the portal of entry was through varicose ulcers; 25 cases (10%) had various origins (gangrene of the lower limbs, surgical operation, ingrown nails, open fractures, burns, sores, etc.); in 26 cases (10%) it was impossible to ascertain the portal of entry.
