Bobo-Dioulasso, August 23 and 24 Lg85' Farako Experiment Dr. Martuel BAYONA-CELIS By ) L ffi -2- PURPOSE 0F THE MrSSr0{ To obtain update of accessibility of the and location, migratory vector breeding sites, BACKGROUND information of the Sikasso-Farako area in regard villages during the rainy season' village size movementsr D€w settlements, location of potential and VCU catching Points. The Farako experiment consists in stopping treatment with larvicides in the simulium potential breeding sites in order to study the impact of the reapearance of the vecLor in regard to transmission and'development of onchocercal infection. Farako area has been selected for this experiment as it has been under treatmerlt with different larvicides for more than 18 years and the prevalence of onchocerciasis has drop from being more than 602 at the beginning of the treatment (1971) to around L37" by 1983. It is needed to carry out a general census of the Farako-Sikasso area and to update the epidemiological evaluation on selected comntrnities as a baseline data for starting the f'arako experiment as soon as possible. Data about irmnigration of potentially infected individuals is importanr in order to assess the danger of onchocerciasis transmission dufing the experiment. Thus, baseline data about the current eni"';uic levels and intensity of infection in the villages is fundamental to reach the gaal of the experiment. For this reason update information about accessibility of the villages during the rainy season. migration, new settlement, location of potential vector breeding sites, and VCU catching points is needed before conducting any activites in the elrea. Mr pangaleE, currently in charge of aerial operations (CAO) for OCP ( in Sobo-Oioulasso \,ras interviewed for this prupose. Mr Pangalet has b,een in the area of Farako-Sikasso working for a govermenEal progranrne (Campagne FED/FAC) as enromologist from 1965 to 1974. From l-975 to 1976 he was the OCp entomologist in charge of the Farako river basin. From 1976 to 1977 he was the OCP sect,or Chief in Bamako. He currently visits such area, and his ACTIVITIES -3- the" Sikasso area children attend to The following activities were informat ion. he has relatives in Sikasso. frequently as the school in carried out to obtain all necessary r) Determination in the maps of the the area, VCU catching points and size and location potential vector of all villages breeding sites. 1n II) Confirmation in the maps about the location of roads and rivers III) Determination of the accessibility for each village during the rainy season. IV) Assessment of the approximated distance from nearest pavemented road, VCU catching point, sites. every village to the and potential breeding For these purposes a quesEionnaire and a simple data collection form was designed by rhe EPI Unir (see appendix I). RESULTS Specific data about 25 communities in the Farako-sikasso area r"ras possible to collect in regard to village size, distance from the nearest pavemented road, and accessibility during the rainy season (appendix II). The location of potential vector breeding sites and VCU catching points was obtained as well (see map). Information about migratory movements in the area and additional data for the villages of Finkolo, Darsalam and the Farako Tea plantation was also collected (1). Information already collected during EPI evaluation surveys for 1O of the villages in 1983 was kindly reviewed and updated by Mr pangalet (2) . Map checking for locacion of cor, munities, roads, and accessibility was carried out by Dr H. Agoua and Mr Pangalet with the available informa- tion (2,3) (see map). 4- A complete report wirh al1 information, maps and tables will be prepared including also Ehe data available from Epr surveys. CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMI'{ENDAT TONS The information obtained during this mission may be useful for future activities in the arca. From Mr Pangalet information the following must be underlined : 1) Migration in the Farako-Sikasso area is mainly due to drought. Three different migratory grorrps can be found in the area : 1.1) Fishermen (Bozos). This group is always traveling. They usuarly travel using little boats 1'2) Nomadic Pastoralists (Peulhs). This group moves often into the area and are l0caterd in separated temporary settlements. 1.3) rarm workers (sedentary) form regions such as Mopti, Dogou and even from Senegal. This group of people is the most numerous in the area. The most important region for inmrigration of this kind is Ehe Eea plantation. A detailed assessmenL of the importance of migration and prevalence of onchocerciasis among immigrarrts is important in re,*;rrd of potential Erans- mi s s ion. 2) Accessibility. A11 comnruniries areaccessible by road. Most of them are located no more t.han 5 icilometers from the nearest pavemented road. However, in some cases clue to the rain a 4 wheel drive vehicle may be necessary. Therefore, for activities in the area during t,he rainy season a 4 wheel drive .",ehicle is recommended. .> )' -5- REFERENCES 1) AGOUA, H. : Compte-Rendrr de la Mission d'une D6l6gation de 1'OCP- Banque Mondiale en zone Ouest et en Guin6e.
