MENINGITIS (24 July 1989). — 1 A total of 807 cases (89 deaths) of meningitis were treated in various hospitals within Nairobi Pro vince between January and 10 July 1989 (54 cases per 100000 Nairobi population). Approximately 75% of these diagnosed cases were among children below 15 years and young adults m the age group 16-25 years. Neisseria meningitidis type A was identified as the pathogen in 35 cases and found to be sensitive to penicillin, chloramphenicol, ampicillin, tetracycline and erythromycin but resistant to cotrimoxazole. Patients responded well to treatment with chloram phenicol and crystalline penicillin. Containment measures include active case finding, contact tracing, advice to seek medical attention at earliest symptoms, health education to avoid overcrowding, and advice on personal and public hygiene. Selective vaccination of children at risk and prophylactic treatment of close contacts are proceeding.* K enya

1 Voir N" 28, 1989, p 219.
