ACQUIRED IMMUNODEFICIENCY SYNDROME (AIDS) China (Province of T aiwan). — AIDS was added to the list of reportable diseases in June 198S. The first case meeting the CDC/WHO case definition1was diagnosed on 27 January 1986 in a young homosexual man residing in Taipei City. The first sign of illness, intermittent diarrhoea, appeared in June 1985 and was followed by fever, headaches, weight loss and pneumonia. He died on 2 March 1986. The patient had had approximately 100 homo sexual partners over the past 12 years. At least 3 o f them were foreigners; the last foreign contact dating 2 years pnor to the diagnosis of AIDS. All other sexual partners were residents of Taiwan ; the patient denied foreign travel m the past 5 years. This is the first indication of LAV/HTLV-III infection in the province of Taiwan and the Department of Health has initiated studies to assess the magnitude o f the problem.
SYNDROME DTMMUNODÉFICIT ACQUIS (SIDA) Chine (Province de T aïwan). — En juin 1985, le SIDA a été ajouté à la liste des maladies à déclaration obligatoire. Le premier cas correspon dant à la définition des cas du CDC et de l’OMS1a été diagnostiqué le 27 janvier 1986, chez un jeune homosexuel habitant à Taipeh. Le premier symptôme de la maladie, une diarrhée intermittente, est apparu en juin 1985 et a été suivi d’hyperthermie, de maux de tête, d’une perte de poids et d’une pneumonie. Le sujet est décédé le 2 mars 1986. Il avait eu approximativement 100 partenaires sexuels au cours des 12 années pré cédentes. Au moins 3 d’entre eux étaient des étrangers. Le dernier contact avec un étranger s’était produit 2 ans avant le diagnostic de SIDA. Tous les autres partenaires sexuels étaient des habitants de Taïwan et le malade a affirmé ne pas avoir été à l’étranger au cours des 5 aimées précédentes. C est là le premier indice de l’existance de l’mfection à LAV/HTLV-III dans la province de Taïwan et le Ministère de la Santé a entrepris des études pour évaluer l’ampleur du problème.
