INFLUENZA F iji (information dated 7 November 1970). — 1 An outbreak of influenza type B is occurring in Suva. This outbreak started following the Indépendance Celebrations of 10 October, when many people from overseas and within the territory travelled to Suva. Influenza virus B was isolated and serological evidence of infection with virus B was obtained. Serological surveillance by complement fixation test has also detected in Lautoka a sharp rise in the incidence of infections with virus B over the last two weeks. P u e r t o R ico (information dated 7 November 1970). — 2 During the third week of August 1970, there was in Puerto Rico an increas ing incidence of cases of influenza-like illness localized in a few municipalities in the north-west section of the island.2 The number of reported cases continued to rise through mid-October, most occurring in Hatillo, Quebradillas, and Adjuntas. Many cases of influenza-like illness have been seen, but not officially reported in Lares, Utuado, Camuy, Aguada, Las Marias, and San Sebastian, in the same section of the island. By the end of October, however, all reported outbreaks had either reached the peak or started to decline. In the influenza season in Puerto Rico which is currently either at or past its peak, only 7 258 cases have been reported (July 1 through Oct. 20, 1970), against 28 141 during the 1969-70 season (A2/Hong Kong/68), 143 388 during the 1968-69 season (A2/Hong Kong/68) and 107 519 during the 1967-68 season (A2 variant pre valent before the arrival of the Hong Kong virus). 1 See No. 20, p. 227. GRIPPE

* Voir N° 45, p. 499.
