— 80 — The notifications of deaths from “influenza” in the 15 largest municipalities of the Netherlands show that 19 deaths were reported in December 1969 against 30 in December 1968, although the number of cases of influenza-like illness was larger in December 1969. Hundred and eighty-five deaths were notified in these 15 municipal ities for the first 23 days of January 1970, about the epidemic peak. It is recalled that the disease is associated with virus A2/Hong- Kong/68. U nited States of America (week ended 31 January 1970). — 1 After the decrease of last week, a new increase in the “number of deaths from pneumonia and Influenza in 122 United States cities” has been observed this week. There are no major widespread out breaks of influenza-like illness in the country, although a number of scattered outbreaks have occurred in the east and the south-east, in particular in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Maryland, Georgia, the southern half of Mississippi, Louisiana (where the disease is spreading from the southern half to the north), the southern and western parts of Alabama, and Ohio. In the west, an increasing incidence has been reported from three counties in Oregon. Additional isolations of virus A2/Hong Kong/68 were obtained from Massachusetts, Louisiana (New Orleans area), Alabama and Ohio. 1 See No. 6, p. 72. LEPROSY U nited States of America. — From 1949 through 1968, a total of 1 820 cases of leprosy were reported in the United States includ ing Puerto Rico; 89 percent of these cases (1 612) were reported from seven areas: California, Florida, Hawaii, Louisiana, New York City, Texas and Puerto Rico. For this 20-year period, the majority of the persons diagnosed with leprosy in the United States of America were bom and had probably been exposed to the disease outside the USA. Of those bom in the USA, 236 were reported from Texas, 212 from Hawaii, 56 from Louisiana, 28 from Florida and 24 from California. Leprosy was diagnosed before 1968 in 187 persons who entered the military service after 1940. Of these, 30 most probably had exposure to the disease whilst overseas.
