I O on road safety and health; and WHA57. 12 on reproductive health: draft trategy to accelerate progre s toward the attainment of international development goal and targets; United ation General A embly re olution 58/289 on improving global road afety; the elebration of World Health Day 2004, dedicated Lo road safery; and the launche of the World report on road traf ic injury preven.rion, and the Regional Office for Europe's report Preventing road rrajjic injury: a public health per pective for Europe; Recognizing the burden of injuries in WHO' European Region, which i even increa ing in orne countrie of the Region, and the urgent need for public health action to reduce the relenlle daily loss of life and suffering caused by unintentional injury and violence; Mindful that thi response should take into account the di ver ity of the European Region, the inequalities in the burden of injurie acro and within countrie . and th oppottunitie created by adopting a public health approach that promote multi ectoral action in which the health ector play a coordinating rote, as well as by main treaming injury prevention acro s different policies within and outside health sy tems; WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION • REGIONAL OFFICE FOR EUROPE Scherfigsvej 8. URGES Member States: (a) to give high priority to the prevention of violence and unintentional injury by developingnational action plans so a to ·trengthen their effo11 to implement exi ting World HealthA embly and Regional Committee resolution ;(b) to develop injury surveillance, in order to obtain a better under tanding and to raiseawareness of the burden. cause and consequence of injuries, so that programmes andinve ·tments for prevention, care and rehabilitation can be better targeted, monitored andevaluated;(c) to. trengthen their technical and institutional capacity to addre the i ue of injurie , bothin terms of prevention and a long the whole continuum of trauma care, from thepreho pital phase, through ho. pital care to rehabilitation;(d) to promote the implernentation of evidence-based approaches for prevention and care,which would al o in volve e tabli ·hing effective mechanisms for identifying,di eminating and sharing good practices acro and within countries and ectors;(e) to takc stock of and support the activities of the network of national focal points for theviolence and injury prevention, to promote the dissemination and sharing of experience indeveloping and implementing policie and actions to reduce the burden of injury acrosthe Region;2. REQUESTS the Regional Director:(a) to suppo11 Member State in their efforts to strengthen injury prevention and to draw upnational action plans; s s ss s s (b) EUR/RC55/Conf.Ooc./6 page 3 to facilitate the identification and haring of good practice in the prevention of violence and unintentional injurie ; (c) to timulate and support the network of national focal point and further dev lop collaboration with other relevant network of expert and profes ionals; (d) to provide assistance in building capacity at the technical and policy level in order to strengthen national response to injuries to include surveillance, evidence-based practice and evaluation; (e) to provide technical as istance to improve care for victim of unintentional injuries and violence: (f) to promote the development of partner hip and collaboration with the European mon and other international organization , in particular the Council of Europe, the European Conference of Minister of Transport, the Organisation for Economie Co-operation and Development, the United 1ations Economie Commission for Europe and the nited ations Children' s Fund. as appropriate, to enhance the response to the chai lenges posed by different causes of injuries. s s e s s s Ll • s s u N
