ROTAVIRUS SURVEILLANCE U n it e d K in g d o m . — In 1975 the first full year in which rota viruses were reported to the Public Health Laboratory Service for the Communicable Disease Report, there were over 600 reports. These reports which were most frequent in winter came from many laboratories and nearly all concern infants with symptoms of gastroenteritis. The age of the infant was recorded in 582 of the 612 reports received. There were 87 infants less than one month, 240 from 1 to 11 months, another 240 between one and four years, 13 from five to nine and two between 10 and 14 years of age. The oldest child who was 12 years o f age had symptoms of appendicitis; p o th e r child of 12 had no symptoms. One child of 11 had vomit ing and diarrhoea. O f three children, nine years of age, one had hepatitis and two gastroenteritis. The only outbreak which was reported occurred in the neonatal wards of a maternity unit last May when 18 infants had mild diarrhoea with offensive stools. The incubation period in that outbreak appeared to be about three days.

SURVEILLANCE DES ROTAVIRUS R oyaume -U n i .
