Noting that most of the world's population still suffers from diseases ei ther directly spread by infected water supplies or related t o the scarcity of household water for hygienlc purposes;
Recognizing that many ccmtries of the Region are meking considerable efforts t o conserve and develop Weir water resources, including provision of public water supplies;
Noting the resolution of the Sixteenth World Health ~ssembl~ ' concerning c o m n i t y water supply;
Considering, however, i n view of the facts presented by the Regional Director2, that the ra te of commity water supply development i n the Region a s a whole mst be greatly accelerated i n order to reach its goal within a reasonable time and i n order to keep pace with the powlation increase,
1. URGES the Governments of the Region t o give high priority to their national c o m n i t y water supply programmes;
2. RECOMMENDS Wat the Governments give urgent attention t o the solution of organizational and f i sca l problems which impede success so that available national and international resources can be put t o use on as wide a scale as possible;
3. REQDESTS the Regional Director t o continue to make available t o the Governments expert advice related to plblic water supplies, and t o promote and ass is t the development of f ac i l i t i e s for training a t different levels of specialists required t o build, operate, w a g e , and maintain waterworks.
