1 of 6 Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) External Situation Report #105 18 May 2022 Period of Report: 11 to 17 May 2022, as of 18 May 2022, 10:00 (GMT+8) x- Overall strategy The World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for the Western Pacific (The Regional Office) encourages Member States to continue to suppress transmission of COVID-19 in order to avoid exceeding health system capacities and to protect vulnerable populations. A risk-based approach using the following tools is recommended: COVID-19 vaccination, calibrated public health and social measures, strengthened health system capacity, early detection and targeted response and international border measures. Key highlights ● New cases of COVID-19 were reported in 25 countries or areas in the Western Pacific Region (WPR) within the past seven days: American Samoa 91, Australia 369 045, Brunei Darussalam 1849, China 450 075, Cook Islands 112, Fiji 87, French Polynesia 61, Guam 151, Japan 260 886, Kiribati 1, the Republic of Korea 202 948, Lao People’s Democratic Republic (PDR) 525, Malaysia 17 538, Mongolia 391, New Caledonia 465, New Zealand 56 180, Northern Mariana Islands 10, Palau 97, Papua New Guinea 555, the Philippines 1083, Samoa 1125, Singapore 22 647, Tonga 438, Vanuatu 428 and Viet Nam 18 751. ● Six Western Pacific countries or areas that had previously reported cases have reported no new cases within the past seven days: Cambodia (10 days), Marshall Islands (22 days), Micronesia (Federated States of) (16 days), Nauru (41 days), Niue (16 days) and Wallis and Futuna (35 days). Three Pacific Island countries or areas have not reported a case to date: Pitcairn Islands, Tokelau and Tuvalu. Solomon Islands did not update the number of cases due to delays in reporting, but there is ongoing transmission. Between 11 to 17 May 2022, a total of 1 405 539 cases with 1263 deaths were reported, for a cumulative 57 832 785 cases with 228 196 deaths (proportion of fatal cases (PFC) 0.4%) as of 18 May 2022, 10:00 (GMT+8). Available data indicate that countries and areas in the WPR have identified imported cases and/or localized community transmission, while subnational areas in some WPR countries and areas have identified large-scale community transmission. Figure 1 shows the geographical distribution of cases reported in the last seven days. Updated information about transmission stage assessment (TSA) 1 in each Member State is available on the TSA map dashboard. ● Globally, 519 729 804 COVID-19 cases with 6 268 281 deaths have been reported in 231 countries or areas (PFC 1.2%) as of 17 May 2022 21:00 (CEST). The number of new weekly cases increased in the African Region, the Region of the Americas and the Eastern Mediterranean Region while it has decreased in the South-East Asia Region and the European Region. Between 15 to 21 June 2022, a total of 822 782 cases with 1888 deaths were reported, for a cumulative 63 158 787 cases with 236 401 deaths (proportion of fatal cases (PFC) 0.4%) as of 22 June 2022, 10:00 (GMT+8). Available data indicate that countries and areas in the WPR have identified imported cases and/or localized community transmission, while subnational areas in some WPR countries and areas have identified large- scale community transmission. Figure 1 shows the geographical distribution of cases reported in the last seven days. Updated information about transmission stage assessment (TSA)1 in each Member State is available on the TSA map dashboard. ● Globally, 537 591 764 COVID-19 cases with 6 319 395 deaths have been reported in 232 countries or areas (PFC 1.2%) as of 21 June 2022 18:30 (CEST). The number of new weekly cases increased in the South-East Asia Region, the European Region and the Eastern Mediterranean Region while it has decreased in other regions. Figure 1. The campaign reached 140.5 million people on Facebook in Cambodia, Lao PDR, Mongolia, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Pacific islands, Taiwan (China) and Viet Nam. It generated 7.1 million post engagements that included reactions, shares, link clicks, comments and at least 3 seconds of video plays. The campaign aimed to encourage pregnant and breastfeeding women to continue COVID-19 precautions and to combat misinformation on pregnancy, breastfeeding, and COVID-19. ● Launched the Early Essential Newborn Care (EENC) campaign over Facebook Philippines on 26 August. The campaign includes COVID-19 protective measures while practicing EENC. It has so far reached 12.6 million Facebook users in the Philippines, Mongolia, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu.

From 14 to 20 September 2022, a total of 1 333 626 cases with 2426 deaths were reported, for a cumulative 88 410 478 cases with 268 170 deaths (proportion of fatal cases (PFC) 0.3%) as of 21 September, 10:00 (GMT+8). Available data indicate that countries and areas in the Region have identified imported cases and/or localized community transmission, while subnational areas in some countries and areas have identified large-scale community transmission. Figure 1 shows the geographical distribution of cases reported in the last seven days. Updated information about transmission stage assessment (TSA)1 in each Member State is available on the TSA map dashboard. ● Globally, 610 393 563 COVID-19 cases with 6 508 521 deaths have been reported in 233 countries or areas (PFC 1.1%) as of 21 September 2022 18:00 (CEST). New Guidance ● WHO published a series of COVID-19 policy briefs that are based on previously published technical guidance. WHO Member States are in different situations with regard to COVID-19 due to a number of factors such as population-level immunity, public trust and access to vaccines and therapeutics. These policy briefs provide the basis for an agile response as countries continue to confront the pandemic while consolidating the foundation for a stronger public health infrastructure and strengthening the global architecture for health emergency preparedness, response and resilience. The policy briefs outline essential actions that national and sub-national policy makers can implement for the following: ○ COVID-19 testing ○ Clinical management of COVID-19 ○ Reaching COVID-19 vaccination targets ○ Maintaining infection prevention and control measures for COVID-19 in health care facilities ○ Building trust through risk communication and community engagement ○ Managing the COVID-19 infodemic Strategic Communication ● Integrated report on perceptions and behavioral insights on COVID-19 across seven countries in the Western Pacific Region is being finalized. ● Monitoring, evaluation and learning (MEL) report for January to June is being prepared. ● Ongoing social listening activities and support to country offices. ● Content on contextual measures in different settings and booster doses are being developed. The campaign includes COVID-19 protective measures while practicing EENC. It is currently running in the Philippines as well, and ran in Mongolia, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu on 18 August-18 September. Overall, the campaign has so far reached 36.9 million people in these WPR countries.

A risk-based approach using the following tools is recommended: COVID-19 vaccination, calibrated public health and social measures, strengthened health system capacity, early detection and targeted response, and international border measures. Key highlights ● New cases of COVID-19 were reported in 21 countries or areas in the Western Pacific Region within the past seven days: Australia 13 592, Brunei Darussalam 1519, Cambodia 78, China 338 449, Fiji 11, Guam 95, Japan 377 528, the Republic of Korea 211 948, Lao People’s Democratic Republic (PDR) 303, Malaysia 12 811, Marshall Islands 51, Micronesia (Federated States of) 537, Mongolia 390, New Caledonia 39, New Zealand 4071, Northern Mariana Islands 15, Palau 15, Papua New Guinea 36, the Philippines 16 375, Singapore 16 363, and Viet Nam 13 506. ● Two Western Pacific countries or areas that had previously reported cases have reported no new cases within the past seven days: Tuvalu (35 days), and Pitcairn Islands (69 days).
