Influenza Canada (10 December 1996).1 The number of influenza virus isolates continued to increase in the first week of December. Most were influenza A and most of those subtyped were of H3N2 subtype, but the first H1N1 isolate this season was also identified. Italy (17 December 1996). The first influenza virus isolated this season was influenza A(H3N2). It was a sporadic case in a 67-year-old patient in Parma (northern Italy). Latvia (12 December 1996). Morbidity from acute respiratory diseases increased in recent weeks. The first confirmed case of influenza was influenza A diagnosed in a young child in the last week of November. Additional sporadic cases of influenza A and 1 case of influenza B were diagnosed in children in December. Sweden (13 December 1996).2 Absenteeism among children in schools and day care centres and among the elderly in nursing homes has increased but without any increase in laboratory-confirmed cases of influenza. A few cases of influenza A and influenza B were diagnosed by immunofluorescence tests in the northern, central and southern parts of the country in the last week of November and first week of December. 1 2

Switzerland (16 December 1996).1 Reports from the network of sentinel physicians indicate that influenza activity has reached epidemic levels in the western and southeastern parts of the country. The increase in reports on influenza-like illness was accompanied by an increased number of influenza A virus isolates. All isolates further subtyped have been H3N2. United States of America (16 December 1996).2 Influenza activity continued to increase in the first week of December when 17 states reported regional or widespread influenza activity. The percentage of patient visits due to influenza-like illness reported by sentinel physicians reached 5% which, for the first time this season, is above the baseline values. Influenza A continues to predominate, accounting for 99% of all isolates reported. All isolates further subtyped have been of H3N2 subtype, including 1 initially reported as H1N1. 1 2
