STATEMENT BY PROFESSOR JUN-ICHI SUZUKI REPRESENTATIVE, INTERNATIONAL FEDERATION OF OTORHINOLARYNGOLOGICAL SOCIETIES (IFOS) Dear Dr Omi and all the colleagues in the WHO-Western Pacific Region After the IFOS-EB Meeting in Sao Paulo in August 2003, I attended the WHO-WPR annual session in September 2003. Hearing International General Assembly was held in Beijing, China in December 2003. The GA was followed by a Post-Congress Meeting in Nanjing. The 10th Asia-Oceania ORL Congress was held in Kuala Lumpur in February 2004. Suchitra Prasansuk organized a session for Hearing International. Jan J. Grote, Yash Pal Kapur, Chun Sun Kim, Yoshi Nakai joined. I enjoyed meeting many colleagues from many countries. It is obvious that Indonesia, such a big country, needs many Ear Care centres in various cities in different islands. We had Centers in four cities, Jakarta, Solo, Dempasar and Makassar. New Centers are now planned in Surabaya, the second largest city in Indonesia, in Padan, Meddan, Palenbang, Jogyakarta, previous capital of Indonesia, and then will be in several cities in East Indonesia. Inviting senior colleagues of the Centers and the new Centers to Japan is another project. Since December 2003 three pairs visited Japan each for 10 days. We found this very important and useful. Inviting juniors for study in Japan is also soing on. Before, Shimizu-Foundation and now Takeda-Science-Foundation are supporting and cooperating with us. appreciates their support. Our project

A "Book" for Hearing people to understand the Hearing Impaired and the Deaf was published in June by Springer-Verlag Tokyo. More than 100 colleagues, including a variety of specialities and several hearing impaired, working for the Hearing Impaired contributed to the "Book". Editors and Springer appreciate the authors' cooperation, expecting the best utilization of the "Book" for their valuable work. HI-Japan also has been preparing for the production of a
HighQualityLowCostHearingAid already for three years in both Japan and Indonesia. Now, during this year, 2004, we will make the ideas realistic. This idea is a HI-Committee's
conclusion in Singapore in 2001. HI and WHO are also working hard on this issue. Construction of a Hospital for Ear Care in Indonesia in cooperation of HI-Japan and HI_Indonesia is now under consideration. We wish the idea will also be realized this year. HI Japan has concentrated its project for Ear Health Care in Indonesia since 1995. Now, JICA-HD project is expanding the Project in cooperation with Neighbouring Countries. In this connection, in September this year, Hendarto Hendarmin will be decided as a Vice President of Hearing International in HI-GA in Phoenix. On 3-5 December, 2004, Hong Kong Society of Audiology will have International Conferences on Recent Development in Paediatric Audiology. On 22-25 March 2005, Tinnitus Research and Balance Clinic in Australia will hold the 32nd Annual Meeting of the Neurotoological and Equilibriometric Society in Melbourne .
