EXPANDED PROGRAMME ON IMMUNIZATION Poliomyelitis D o m in ic a n R e p u b l ic . — As a result of the occurrence of two foci o f poliomyelitis, one in Santo Domingo and the other in Bani, it was decided to intensify poliomyelitis vaccination with the Sabin oral vaccine and to give three doses. Attention was focused on immunization through the basic health services in the areas round the towns and in the countryside from which most of the cases reported had occurred. As cases were occurring even though vaccination had been in operation for years, the State Secretariat of Public Health and Social Welfare has decided to improve the refrigeration facilities by establishing a cold room and a freezer with its own supply of energy in each of the six health areas of the Republic. In the same way the Epidemiology Division is supplying these health areas with thermometers so that a check may be made of the temperature of the refrigerators. About 1 200 000 doses of Sabin vaccine were distributed during 1976 and the immunization programme covered children from the age o f three months to the age of five years. The vaccinations were given according to a schedule in which the second dose was administered six to eight weeks after the first and the third dose six to eight months after the second. Special emphasis is being laid on ensuring coverage for children between three months and two years of age, the age group in which almost all the cases occurred. (Continued on page 342)

R é p u b l iq u e D o m in ic a in e .

(Suite page 342)
