SURVEILLANCE DE LA LEGIONELLOSE F rance .

ellosis received 7 458 sera corresponding to 4 623 patients, of whom 164 bad a positive diagnosis: 158 on the basis o f serology (Table l ) and 6 by culture. The annual survey by questionnaire shows 86 positive diagnoses, 1ofthem by culture. The laboratones using their own antigens revealed the existence o f 182 positive diagnoses, including 28 positive cultures. This therefore yields a total o f432 certain or presumed casesof legionellosis, which is an increase of one-third over the previous year (328). The disease almost invariably occurs outside the hospital. Faiality remains at around 17-20%. The following distnbuuon by titre was obtained for the positive serodiagnoses: — seroconversion: 16-128 for Legionella pneumophila: 16-256 for the other Legionella-, — presumptive: 256. As new Legionella species are discovered, the Centre produces the antigens and immune sera required for diagnosis o f the infec tions that they cause. The antigens are prepared in chick embry o and formalized. The sera are obtained by immunization of rabbits The virulence ofthe strains is maintained in chick embryos and in the spleen of guinea-pigs following intraperitoneal administration (freezing at - 7 0 "Q. The antigens are used in the indirect immu nofluorescence test (reference method). The following antigens are prepared: — monovalent antigens representative of L pneumophila semi groups 1-9 and of the species L. micdudei, bozemanu, dumoffu,

The Centre has produced the specific antisera for these various antigens. In addition, a polyvalent antiserum (1-2-3-4) was pre pared following fractionation of the specific monovalent antisera (IgG). These monovalent and polyvalent antigens and these sera are used by the Centre and are supplied free to requesting labora tories.
