Background Three CDTI projects are being implemented in Sudan under one NOTF. The first is the Headquarters CDTI project, the second is the South Sudan Onchocerciasis Control Programme (SSOCP) coordinated by Health Net and the third is Govemment of Sudan (GOS) CDTI project coordinated by the NOTF through States and Regional Oncho Task Forces. Raja, one of the provinces of Bahr El Gahzal Zone, has 19 communities, with some camps for displaced people. lnsecurity as well as inaccessibility and isolation of some endemic areas during rainy season remain the major constraints faced by these projects. ln spite of the constraints, therapeutic coverage has been maintained at 65% (at least) and geographical coverage at 91% in the project areas. 5 rounds of treatment have been achieved. Any other matters Prof. Mamoun Homeida, Nationat Coordinator NOCP Sudan, chaired the meeting.He gave a comprehensive review of oncho control in Sudan and explained that Raja was selected as the site in Sudan for the study because it a known blinding oncho site. The results of the first round of studies in Raja were discussed. Ptans for the second round of studies were discussed as indicated in the agenda. On August 6&7, equipment and supplies available from first round of study were checked. List of in-country team members was compiled after due consultations with persons proposed. E. Outcome of visit 1. Update on studyr site Raja, the study site has received five rounds of treatment with lvermectin since 199g when the baseline data was collected (flrst round of studies). The NoTF also took advantage of the impact assessment study to carry out other health interventions. A team of clinicians in seven days examined and treated up to 1,000 persons with various ailments including mataria, Skin disease, TB, Goiter, Syphilis, Pelvic inflammatory disease, and chest infections. Vitamin A and anti epilepsy drugs were distributed. Raja now has supply of electricity and there has been general improvement in infrastructure of the site. Therapeutic coverage in Raja is about g0%. 5 2. NOCP will communicate cost of hiring the aircraft to APOC management by Dec 1, 2003. The aircraft will be hired for the following movements. Two vehicles will be available for the use of the team at the site One vehicle from APOC CDTI One vehicle from Carter Center 5. Accommodation NOCP will be responsible for making hotel reservations in Khartoum for extemal team members. With regards to accommodation in Raja, during the first round of the studies, an apartment was prepared by the NOCP by NOCP. Similar arangement will be made for the second round. 6. Brifrng of parfiters NOCP will arrange for the team to brief and debrief WR, NGDO, and Ministry of Health Officials. Appointments for these will be made before team arrives Khartoum. Briefing of policy makers in Raja will be done on anival at the site. 8.
