SMALLPOX: COUNT DOWN ^ The global programme of smallpox eradication has reached the point that progress is now monitored in terms of the number of “ infected villages" in each area. A village Is considered infected until six weeks have elapsed since onset of rash of the last case and until a special search is made to confirm that no further cases have occurred. VARIOLE: LE COMPTE À REBOURS ► Le programme mondial d'éradication de la variole a maintenant atteint le stade où les progrès sont exprimés par le nombre de «villages infectés» dans chaque zone. On considère qu'un village est infecté pendant les six semaines qui suivent l'apparition des éruptions ef tant qu'une enquête n'a pas établi l'absence de tout nouveau cas. Le Tableau ci-dessus donne les informations les plus récentes avec, en regard, les chiffres enregistrés quatre semaines auparavant.

INFLUENZA H ong K o n g T err. — (22 August 1975)l. Since early July 1975, sporadic cases of influenza have been observed without a marked increase in the notification of the disease. Fourteen strains of virus B have been isolated. All isolates give low haemagglutination-inhibition titres with the B/Hong Kong/5/72 antiserum, variant of virus B circulating previously. U ruguay (15 August 1975). — During the first half of July, scattered cases of influenza A, supported by serological evidence, were reported, but up to mid-August no further cases were observed. ‘ SeeNo. 30, p, 274.

GRIPPE H ong K ong T err. — (22 août 1975)l. Depuis début juillet 1975, on observe des cas sporadiques de grippe sans augmentationmarquée des notifications de cas cliniques. On a isolé 14 souches de virus B qui présentent toutes de faibles titres d’inhibition de l’hémagglutination avec l’antisérum B/Hong Kong/5/72, variant du virus B qui circulait précédemment. U ruguay (15 août 1975). — Pendant la première moitié du mois de juillet, on a signalé des cas épars de grippe A confirmés par les examens sérologiques; mais jusqu’à mi-août on n ’a pas observé d ’autres cas. 1 Voir N° 30, p. 274.
