This drug is marketed as an intravenous anaesthetic, for veterinary use only.39"-398 Phencyclidine is not used as an anaesthetic in man because it causes a severe psychotic reaction, which has not been well characterized, but which is manifested by marked depersonalization.4'0 Although the effects of phencyclidine are believed to be dysphoric, it has appeared in the illicit market in the USA and is thought to have been illegally synthesized.3" Accordingly it must be regarded as having moderate potential for abuse.
