SURVEILLANCE OF TYPHOID FEVER — In 1975, 529 strains o f Salmonella typhi isolated in France were studied at the Enteric Phage Typing Centre o f the Pasteur Institute in Paris. O f these, 212 (40%) were isolated during a period o f only two months (September and October). Many of these summer cases o f typhoid fever were o f foreign origin, as demonstrated by epidemiological and phage typing data. The regions involved were N orth Africa, West and East Tropical Africa, the Caribbean, the Mediterranean area o f Western Asia, Southern Asia and South-West Europe.
