women).</p></content></level></subparagraph><subparagraph><num>(4)</num><content><p>Sub-paragraph (5) applies if, while a person is detained under paragraph 16, the Secretary of State no longer considers that the examination or removal will be carried out, the decision will be made, or the directions will be given within a reasonable period of time.</p></content></subparagraph><subparagraph eId="d25e445"><num>(5)</num><content><p>The person may be detained under paragraph 16 for such further period as, in the opinion of the Secretary of State, is reasonably necessary to enable such arrangements to be made for the person’s release as the Secretary of State considers to be appropriate.</p></content></subparagraph><subparagraph><num>(6)</num><intro><p>In the application of this paragraph in relation to detention under paragraph 16(3), references to “the removal” are to—</p></intro><level class="para1"><num>(a)</num><content><p>the removal of the person from the ship or aircraft on which the person is detained so that the person may be detained under paragraph 16, or</p></content></level><level class="para1"><num>(b)</num><content><p>the removal of the person from the United Kingdom in that ship or aircraft.</p></content></level></subparagraph><subparagraph><num>(7)</num><content><p>In the application of this paragraph in relation to detention under paragraph 16(4), references to “the removal” are to the removal of the person from the United Kingdom in the ship or aircraft on which the person is detained.</p></content></subparagraph></paragraph></quotedStructure></mod></p></content></level></subsection><subsection eId="section-12-2"><num>(2)</num><intro><p>In paragraph 2 of Schedule 3 to the Immigration Act 1971 (detention or control pending deportation)—</p></intro><level class="para1" eId="section-12-2-a"><num>(a)</num><content><p><mod>after sub-paragraph (3) insert—<quotedStructure startQuote="&#x201C;" endQuote="&#x201D;" uk:context="schedule" uk:docName="ukpga" ukl:TargetClass="primary" ukl:TargetSubClass="unknown" ukl:Context="schedule" ukl:Format="double"><subparagraph eId="d25e488"><num>(3A)</num><content><p>A person liable to be detained under sub-paragraph (1), (2) or (3) may be detained for such period as, in the opinion of the Secretary of State, is reasonably eId="d25e662"><num>(1E)</num><content><p>The person may be detained under subsection (1) for such further period as, in the opinion of the Secretary of State, is reasonably necessary to enable such eId="section-12-6"><num>(6)</num><content><p><mod>In regulation 32 of the Immigration (European Economic Area) Regulations 2016 (<ref eId="c00001" regulation 23(6)(b), that person may be detained under the authority of the Secretary of State pending a decision whether or not to remove the person under that regulation.</p></content></paragraph><paragraph><num>(2)</num><content><p>A person liable to be detained under paragraph (1) may be detained for such period as, in the opinion of the Secretary of State, is reasonably necessary to enable the decision to be made.</p></content></paragraph><paragraph><num>(3)</num><content><p>Paragraph (1) applies regardless of whether there is anything that for the time being prevents the decision from being made.</p></content></paragraph><paragraph><num>(4)</num><content><p>Paragraph (5) applies if, while a person is detained under paragraph (1), the eId="section-68"><num>68</num><heading>Commencement</heading><subsection eId="section-68-1"><num>(1)</num><content><p>Subject to subsections (3) and (4), this Act comes into force on such day as the Secretary of State may by regulations appoint.</p></content></subsection><subsection eId="section-68-2"><num>(2)</num><content><p>Regulations under subsection (1) may appoint different days for
