C. 20433 TELEPHONE: EXECUTIVE 3-6360 November 8, 1971 EDUCATORS FROM SEVERAL COUNTRIES TO VISIT JAMAICA Twelve educators and education administrators and planners from several countries will visit Jamaica, November 20-27. They are among the 24 participants in the 1971 course on Education Programs and Development held by the World Bank's Economic Development Institute (EDI) at its headquarters in Washington, D.C. The other 12 will visit Colombia on the same dates. The EDI provides training for officials concerned with development programs and projects in the Bank's developing member countries. Since its establishment in 1956, over 1,300 officials from more than 100 countries and five international organizations have studied at the EDI • • In the field trip to be undertaken by the 12 participants visiting Jamaica they will be accompanied by Professor Bernard S. Braithwaite, of the United Kingdom. While in Jamaica, the group will meet with Government authorities and officials in charge of World Bank-supported education projects. They will visit schools and discuss implementation of the projects with their local counterparts in the country. The purpose is to give the participants an opportunity to make judgments on how to approach problems on education planning and development. They will also have an opportunity to see at first hand how Jamaica has faced the need to structure the administration of the new schools under the project and the problems involved in their administration, such as enrollment increases, increase in staff, organization of curricular activities, curricula and credit systems, and others. ...__,,,, Jamaica has received two education loans from the World Bank totaling $23.0 million~ one in 1966 and the second in 1971. These funds are helping finance the first and second stages of a project which includes the construction of 50 junior secondary schools and the· expansion of facilities for teacher and technical training as well as the improvement of primary and out-of-school education.
