The course will be given by the Economic Development Institute ·(EDI) of the World Banlt in coopera- tion with the Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta. (IlMC). The Indian Insti- tute is an autonomous organization operating under the auspices. of the Gcvern- • ment of India • Tnis ls the firpt course of its kind to be given by the EDI outsj_de the Bank's headquarters. It will cover the selection and appraisal of investmeut projects, financial policy, financial analysis and the measurement of perforttance of projects in various sectors of' the economy. A large part of the course wiLl be devoted to case studies. Announcements have been sent to ministries and agencies concerned with develop- ment projects in Afghanistan, Burma, Ceylon, India, Malaysia, Nepal, Pakistan and Thailand and nominations will be accepted until June 30. Candidates must be ·nominated by governments, and final selections will be made by the Bank. The course will be conducted by Mr. Ashok Mitra of the Indian Institute of Management and by Mr. George Baldwin and Mr. Jack L. Upper of the Sta.ff of the Economic. Developcient Institute. Mr. Mitra was a member of the Staff of the Economic • Development Institute for several years, returning in 1962 to join the Indian Insti- tute. Administrative arrangements will be handled by the Indian Institute.  - 2 - The Economic DGvelop'.llent Institute was organized by the Bank in 1955 as a staff college for senior officials from less developed count~ies whose work in- volves decisions on economic policy and the :ormulation and administration of development p!'ograms or projects. In 1963, the activities of the Institute were exp9.nded to include a three-month course in pfoject evaluation to meet tne need for specialized training in this field, and three project evaluation courses are being given at the Institute in 1964, one of them in Spanish. Their purpose is to contribute to the building of a larger qu~lified cadre of persons engaged in the ide~tificati0n, preparation and selection of projects in the developing coun- tries. The course provides the participants with an opportw.1ity to become familiar with methods used by engineers, economists, acc0untants and others in preparing and evaluating such projects. and agriculture.
