TELEPHONE: EXE'.CUTIVE 3-6360 Press Release No. 689 SUBJECT: Transport Study in Peru May 24, 1961 The Peruvian Government and the world B..:~k have agreed to sponsor a sur- vey of Peru's highway facilities and the existing regulations governing inland transport. The survey will culminate in recommendations for a. hi.ghway invest• ment program and an effective organization for regulating inland transport. The survey is being undertaken by the New York engineering firm of Coverdale & Colpitts. The Government will finance the local cost of the study • and will share the foreign exchange cost with the Bank. of Development and Public works and the world.Bank are providing general guidance and supervision of the consultants' work. The Peruvian Ministry The consultants wi.11 prepare a report recommending a highway program for a ten-year period, indicating the priorities for investments in main roads, feeder roads and. penetration roads, with preliminary views on thei~ costs and benefits. The report will include recommendations for organizational improvements in the Highway Department of the Ministry of Development and Public Works. The consultants will also mal:r.e recommendations on the organi- zation, duties and functions of a transport commission to regulate inland transport. The survey was started in March. The consultants expect to have their • report ready by the end of 1961 •
