The $94 mill ion project will reduce serious health risks in the Greater Colombo area with a population of 1.5 million. It will improve the ·existing water supply system and the sewage collection system serving the area, as well as extend the sewage collection system to adjacent urban areas • at Kolonnawa and Mt. Lavinia . A distribution reservoir, a pumping station, and a transmission main will also be constructed at Kolonnawa. The project also includes the construction of sewage collection and conveyance facilities in Colombo, K')lonnawa, and Mt. Lavinia. The IDA credit to Sri Lanka is for 50 years with a grace period of 10 years. The credit carries no interest but bears a service charge of 3/4 of 1% per annum to cover administrative costs. The Saudi Fund for Development is co-financing the project with a $30 mill ion loan. • NOTE: Money figures are expressed in U.S. dollar equivalents . Box 14 Mt. Lavinia, Sri Lanka. PROJECT DESCRIPTION: It includes: (a) the construction of a river water intake on the Kelani Ganga and a transmission main to Ambatale treatment plant. The construction of water treatment components to increase the capacity of Ambatale treatment plant. The construction of a pumping station and transmission main to convey water to Kolonnawa. The construction of a distribution reservoir, pumping station, and transmission main at Kolonnawa; (b) the construction of sewage collection and conveyance faci 1 ities in Colombo, Kolonnawa, and Mt. Lavinia. The construction of sewage disposal facilities including two ocean outfalls; and (c) the provision of re~ placement and spare parts, and of miscellaneous items of new p·lant and equipment. • PROCUREMENT: All contracts for equipment and materials and all civil works will be awarded under international competitive bidding in accordance with IDA guidelines, with the exception of items costing less than $100,000 (but no more than $1 mill ion in aggregate). Such items will be procured under local procedure acceptable to IDA. CONSULTANTS: Consultant services will be required for detailed engineering design of a further group of water supply and sewerage works; a water distribution study for the Colombo Municipal area and adjacent towns; and a solid waste collection and disposal study for the Colombo Municipal area.
