The Senegalese government has recently started giving greater emphasis to providing adequate services to secondary centers, particularly in the regional capitals where these services now reach only about 15% of the inhabi- tants through private connections, and an additional 40% through public • standpipes. The $3.2 million water supply engineering and technical assistance project is designed to cover all the necessary economic, financial, and technical studies needed to prepare a priority investment project for rehabilitation and extension of water supply systems in eleven secondary centers of the country, including six regional capitals. The project is expected to make an important contribution to helping the government achieve its long-range objectives of organizing and strengthening the water supply and sanitation sector. It also includes technical assistance to strengthen the planning and operating entities in the sector. The $2.5 million IDA credit is for 10 years, including 2 years of grace. PROCUREMENT: The execution of drilling works will be carried out under contracts awarded following international competitive bidding in accordance with Bank guidelines.
