•World Bank 1818 H Street, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20433, U.S.A. • Telephone: (202) 393-6360 IDA NEWS RELEASE NO. 76/24 JUNE 7, 1976 IDA ASSISTS LIVESTOCK DEVELOPMENT IN SENEGAL Some 30,000 1 ivestock owners in Eastern Senegal will be able to increase their incomes and living standards as a result of a livestock development project being assisted by a credit of $4.2 million from the International Development Association (IDA), an affiliate of the World Bank. The Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KF) and the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA) are providing $5,7 million to the project. Eastern Senegal 1 s potential for crop production is not • high, because of the poor soils. Livestock development constitutes a rational approach to making the best use of the region's human and natural resources. The credit is the first IDA operation in support of livestock development in Senegal. It is also Senegal's first comprehensive effort to increase livestock production by traditional pastoralists through the combination of animal health and husbandry improvements. The project is scheduled to be completed in 1981 at a total estimated cost,of $13 million. The principal direct benefits from the project will be the annual increase in livestock production valued at $3 million and higher incomes for 30,000 livestock owners participating in the project. The IDA credit to Senegal is for 50 years, including 10 years of grace. It is interest-free, except for a service charge of 3/4 of 1% to meet IDA 1 s administrative costs . • NOTE: Money figures are expressed in U.S. dollar equivalents. • T ECHN I CAL DAT A PROJECT: Livestock COUNTRY: Senegal TOTAL COST: $13 mi 11 ion IDA FINANCING: $4. 2 mi 11 ion, standard IDA terms OTHER FINANCING: A loan of $4. l million from the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KF) and a loan of $1.6 million from the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA); the Government of Senegal and participating livestock owners.
