C. 20433 TELEPHONE: EXECUTIVE 3-6360 Bank Press Release No. 74/58 Subject: $23.2 million for a water June 27, 1974 supply project in Ecuador The World Bank has approved a loan of $23.2 million to help finance a project to improve the water supply system in Guayaquil -- Ecuador's largest city and major commercial and industrial center~ and several towns in Guayas province, including the Santa Elena Peninsula. The $38.3 million project, when completed in 1977, will provide adequate water supply to 960,000 inhabitants in Guayaquil, or 80% of the city's popula- tion. At present only 500,000 in the city have access to the municipal water • supply. In addition, the project will bring water service, for the first time, to 76,000 people living in the Santa Elena Peninsula. very low incomesa Most of these people have The project includes the design and construction of treatment plants, transmission lines, distribution networks and metered house connections. The project will also provide funds for studies to prepare a master plan for the supply of water to Guayaquil and the neighboring areas up to the year 2,000. The project will be carried out by the Empress Municipal de Agua Potable de Guayaquil (EMAP), an autonomous municipal agency that supplies water to Guayaquil and other towns in the province of Guayas. 'nle Bank loan of $23.2 mil- lion will cover the foreign exchange cost of the project. The project also includes the provision of funds for a water supply master plan up to ,the yea :r 2,000. PROCUREMENT: All items will be procured through international competitive bidding. Domestic manufacturers will be given a preferential margin of 15% of the CIF price of competing imports or the rate of customs duty applicable, whichever is lower.
