VIRAL HAEMORRHAGIC FEVER SURVEILLANCE Zimbabwe. — Marburg disease was diagnosed in an 18-year-old male in March 1982, some two weeks after he had left his home m a rural area near Nyanda, Fort Victoria. Malaria was first diagnosed and treated. However, persistent nose bleeding and blood in the stools indicated another cause and seven days after the onset o f the haem orrhagic symptoms antibody to Marburg disease virus was detected in the blood. The patient recovered and there were no secondary cases. Preliminary results of investigations of the patient’s family and sur roundings showed antibody to Marburg disease virus in a household dog and in a rodent caught in the nearby bush. Antibody to Ebola and Congo haemorrhagic fever viruses was detected in the father of the patient and in one employee. It is of interest that the household is situated within 20 km of where another case of Marburg disease had stayed in 1974.

In 1981, a serological investigation was carried out among 486 children aged 8 to 10 years from four areas: Omay, Ndowoyo, Maranke and Chiweshe. Antibody to Congo haemonhagic fever virus was detected in 18 sera, to Ebola virus in nine and to Marburg disease virus in four sera. A serum specimen from a child in Ndowoyo had low titre of antibody to Lassa fever virus. None of the investigated sera had antibody to Rift Valley fever virus.

SURVEILLANCE DE LA FIÈVRE HÉMORRAGIQUE VIRALE ........... Z imbabwe.
