RABIES SURVEILLANCE E cuador . — The first pilot programme for rabies eradication in Ecuador was initiated on 14 February 1973, and began in Guayaquil, the largest city in Ecuador. In collaboration with the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization, the programme was progressively extended to cover the whole country. The attack phase o f the programme lasted until 2 March 1973. During this time, 16 teams each of three men were able to vaccinate an average of 5 715 dogs daily. In all, 74 295 dogs— 80 % o f the estimated total population (92900) — were immunized. During the second month following the attack phase, there was a reduction in the incidence o f rabies o f 94%. Vaccination began first in the municipalities of the Province of Guayas, and within a three-month period covered the entire province. This will be followed by con­ solidation and maintenance activities.

SURVEILLANCE DE LA RAGE E quateur. — Le premier programme pilote d ’éradication de la rage en Equateur a été lancé le 14 février 1973, dans la plus grande ville du pays, Guayaquil. H a ensuite été progressivement étendu à l’ensemble du pays avec la collaboration de l’Organisation pana­ méricaine de la Santé/Organisation mondiale de la Santé. La phase d ’attaque a duré jusqu’au 2 mars 1973. Pendant cette période, 16 équipes, de trois hommes chacune, ont vacciné quoti­ diennement une moyenne de 5 715 chiens, soit, au total, 74 295 chiens ou 80% de l’ensemble de la population canine, estimée à 92 900 animaux. Dans le second mois qui a suivi la phase d ’attaque, l ’incidence de la rage a diminué de 94%. Les vaccinations ont d ’abord été effectuées dans les municipalités de la province de Guayas, puis ont été étendues à l’ensemble de la province en l’espace de trois mois. Elles seront suivies d ’activités de consolidation et d ’entretien.
