Regional Committee for Europe Fifty-second session Copenhagen, 16-19 September 2002 DRAFT RESOLUTION EUR/RC52/Conf.Doc./13 22 August 2002 23282 ORIGINAL: ENGLISH RECOMMENDATIONS OF THE FAO/WHO PAN-EUROPEAN CONFERENCE ON FOOD SAFETY AND OUALITY, 25-28 FEBRUARY 2002 The Rcgional Crnnmillce, Concerned that food-related ill hcalth reprcsents a scrious threat to public health in the European Region: Recalling its rcsolution EUR/RC50/R8, by which it en<lorscd the Food and Nutrition Policy and Action Plan for the Europcan Region, and requested the Rcgional Director to coopcrate with and support Member States and other organizations in comprchensive efforts to prornote public hcalth through appropriatc food and nutrition policies; Funher recalling World l-lc:alth Assembly resolution WHA53. l5, which urgcd Member States to integrate food safety as one of thcir essential public health funi:tions and requested the Director Gcneral to give greater emphasis to food safety, in collaboration and coordination with other international organizations. notably the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO); Having considered the report of the FAO/WHO Pan-European Conference on Food Safety and Quality, held in Budapest frorn 25 to 28 February 2002: WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION • REGIONAL OFFICE FOR EUROPE Scherligsvej 8, DK-2100 Copenhagen 0, Denmark Telephone: +45 39 17 17 17 Telefax: +45 39 17 18 18 Te/ex: 12000 who dk Electronic mail: postrnaster@who.dk World Wide Web address. http:J/www.euro.who.int EUR/RC52/Conf .Doc./13 page 2 Aware that the 23rd FAO Regional Conference for Europe. held in Nicosia from 29 to 31 May 2002. endorsed the:: conclusions of the FAO/WHO Pan-European Conference and reque, ted that ils n:curmncndations be forwarded to rnember countries, the European Union, and other international organizations for fo\low-up; Recognizing that development of a food safety stratcgy within the framework of the Food and Nutrition Policy and Action Plan for the European Rcgion is in line with many of the recommendations from the FAO/WHO Pan-Eurupcan Conference, and that these recommendations will strengthen anu cornplement current effo11s to integrate the fo d safety strategy in the Food and Nutrition Policy and Action Plan; 1. URGES Member States: (a) to endorse the recommendations of the FAO/WHO Pan-European Conference on Food Safety and Quality relatcd to public health in the cuntext of development of the Food and Nutrition Policy and Action Plan in Europe; (b) to ensure appropria te support to follow up the rccornmendations of the FAO/WI 10 Pan- European Conference related to public health within the framework of development of a food safety strategy for implcmentation of the Food and Nutrition Policy and Action Plan in Europe; 2. REQUESTS the Regional Dircctor to facilitate cooperation among Member States. WHO, FAO. the Emopean Commission and uthcr organizations in order to promotc public health by improving food safety and nutritional quality through the development of enhanced food safety and nutrition policies and action plans in the Europcan Rcgion.
