DIPHTÉRIE

Argentine. The first outbreak took place in General Taboada Department between 25 February and 15 March 1977 starting with a case recorded in the locality of Suncho Pozo (near Anatuya) in an unvacdnated five year old boy. There were seven cases altogether (four in Suncho Pozo and three in Anatuya), and one seven year old boy died. The second outbreak began on 8 April in the locality of Bajo Hondo (in the Campo del Cielo district o f MatariL Department) (or Felipe Ibarra) in an unvaccinated ten-year old girl who had been in Afiatuya 15 days before the onset of her illness, o f which she died. From this case to the end of July there were ten cases in Matarâ Department (Bajo Hondo, El Cuadrado and La Simona) with a total of four deaths. Apart from these outbreaks two isolated cases were recorded, one in Capital Department (on 16 April), and another in Taboada Department (on 29 April). Only two of the total of 19 cases had records of prior vaccination; in one case three doses had been administered (outcome: recovery without complications) and in the other only one (outcome: death). The outbreak sparked off a wide range of activities, consisting chiefly of a survey of the population, medical examinations, anti biotic therapy, immunotherapy, vaccinations, detection of carriers, and health education.
