HYPOTHESES TO EXPLAIN BARRIER

2.1

D i n g e r , £t a l . (1929) showed t h a t Aedes a e g y p t i from J a v a

c o u l d t r a n s m i t F r e n c h v i s c e r o t r o p i c y e l l o w f e v e r t o r h e s u s monkeys and the same group demonstrated t h a t t r a n s m i s s i o n c o u l d o c c u r w i t h m o s q u i t o e s i n f e c t e d 147 days p r e v i o u s l y . Aedes a l b o p l c t u s , by c o n t r a s t , were poor v e c t o r s . Philip fever

(1956) demonstrated the a b i l i t y o f A s i a n Aedes a e g y p t i t o t r a n s m i t y e l l o w v i r u s and G i l l e t t & Ross (1955) a l s o made s i m i l a r o b s e r v a t i o n s .
