was held on 17-19 March at the headquarters of the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C. Its purpose was to analyze the most recent advances made on the clinical aspects, the etiological agents, immunological mechanisms, the epidemiology and prevention o f hepatitis. One of the more important aspects was, without doubt, the presentation of the advances made in the experimental development o f vaccine against hepatitis caused by virus type B. The studies had been made in dependently by two teams o f investigators, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases of the National Institutes of Health and by the Merck Institute for Therapeutic Research. The vaccines developed by both teams are produced from highly purified material which is believed to contain non-infectious sub-units of the virus. For greater confidence, the vaccines were treated with formalin as preservative in order to assure that the virus is incapable of causing infection. After the first tests in small animals, the vaccines of both groups were tested in chimpanzees where positive and vigorous development of antibodies against the virus was found. The report presented indicates that the vaccines were “potent, safe and adequate” for field trials in man.

d ’A mérique. It was also assured that 200 000 doses of vaccine could be made available to perform studies in human beings. The experimental doses pourraient être mises à la disposition des chercheurs pour des vaccines described in the meeting were made from bicod serum of études sur l’homme.
