STATEMENT BY MR KAM FONG KWONG AND MOIID GHAZALI BIN MOIID ESA REPRESENTATIVES OF THE INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNOLOGISTS
The International Association of Medical Laboratory Technologists (IAMLT) is a world body representing Medical Laboratory Technologists from well over 40 countries. increasing annually and in 1994. 5 countries applied for membership to IAMLT. Our members work in various disciplines such as clinical chemistry. clinical microbiology. haematology. cellular pathology. cytology. blood transfusion medicine. and immunology. Many of them are involved in medical research and primary health care. The members are
CWTiculmn for a course in Health & Safety IAMLT has developed a curriculum for a course in Health & Safety for medical laboratory workers. It is intended to assist or act as a starting point when planning safety training or for an actual educational course. We hope that it will be useful for those involved in developing training programmes for all trainers in laboratory workers all over the world. This curriculum we hope will serve as a standard for the decision makers and those in authority when dealing with health and safety. Qualifications of Medical Laboratory Technologists Our members throughout the world are dedicated to serving the health care needs of the public. The practice of laboratory technology requires high standards of technical skills and sound theoretical knowledge. At the 19th IAMLT Congress in Geneva. Switzerland. the General Assembly of Delegates (GAD) adopted the following statement:

"To ensure the patient's life and health, we strongly recommend clinical laboratory test service and the important diagnostic work in private and in public clinics to be done by fully qualified Medical Laboratory Technologists. " At the 20th GAD in Dublin, Ireland, it was adopted that IAMLT will develop a policy standard re: the authorization or registration of clinical laboratory practice by medical laboratory technoligists. IAMLT Travel and Training Fund IAML T has established a permanent "Travel and Training Fund". The purpose of this fund is to help medical laboratory technologists in developing countries to acquire new knowledge and skills by attending the IAMLT Congress or provide financial support for specific training courses. A large number of our colleagues from different parts of the world attended the 1992 Congress in Ireland and the 1994 Congress in Hong Kong through this fund. We hope this will continue in the future. IAMLT Code of Ethics In 1990 at the GAD it was proposed that a code of ethics to be worked out. The basis of this proposal was to look at ethics as an area of practical philosophy and to find common basic values of the profession of Medical laboratory technology allover the world. In the 1992 GAD this was approved. A copy has been included for your information. Collaboration with NGO IAML T is happy to observe that in recent years WHO, through its regional ofices, has put more focus on working with the nongovernmental organizations. IAMLT supports this. Finally IAMLT would like to thank WHO, Regional Office for the Western Pacific. IAMLT would offer her best to work with WHO to achieve the common goal "Health for all by the year 2000". ,.....
