Wkty eptdem. Rtc.- No. 15- 11 April 1974 - 130 - Relevé épidém. hebd.; N“ 15 - 11 avril 1974 INFLUENZA I t a ly (information dated 27 March 1974). — 1 *Scattered influenza cases are still occurring in Rome. Whereas the first isolate mentioned last week was a strain of virus A, two strains identified this week are B viruses. R e pu b l ic or K o rea (information dated 26 March 1974). — 3 The influenza epidemic, which started on 20 February and caused out breaks throughout the country, ended on 30 March after a peak on 10 March. All age groups were affected. Two strains of virus A have been isolated and sent to the World Influenza Centre, London. U n it e d K in g d o m (information dated 30 March 1974). — 3 In England and Wales, during the period 10-20 March, the incidence of cases of influenza-like illness appears to have reached the highest levels since the beginning of the influenza season. A decrease was, however, subsequently observed during the week ended 27 March in the weekly applications to the London Emergency Bed Service. Substantial numbers of isolations of influenza A as well as influenza B viruses were reported from different parts of the country, although influenza B was still predominant. In Scotland, where a slow decrease in influenza incidence was previously reported, morbidity due to influenza virus B appears to be dwindling; however, an increased number of reports of illness associated with virus A was recorded during week ended 30 March. Y u g o slavia (information dated 26 March 1974). — 4 In Croatia, an increased incidence of influenza-like illness has been observed from mid-February. The disease appeared first among school children and then an epidemic developed in all age groups in the eastern part of the country. It then spread towards the west, where the intensity was lower and where it was observed mostly in schools. One strain of virus B has been isolated, and serological evidence of infection with virus B has been obtained from 30 paired sera out of 44 which were tested. 1 See No. 14, p. 121. s See No. 13. p. 106. » See No. 12, p. 102. * See N o. 6, p. 54. GRIPPE I ta lie (information en date du 27 mars 1974). * Voir N® 13, p. 106. s Voir N® 12, p. 102. 4 Voir N° 6, p. 54. BRUCELLOSIS C o sta R ic a . — Statistics of hospital discharges in the years 1969 and 1970, respectively, show 18 cases of brucellosis with an average hospital stay of 11 days, and 11 cases of brucellosis with an average stay of 13 days. The prevention of human cases of this disease is best accomplished by the control of infected animals. Serological tests of 66 628 bovines in the year 1972 revealed 1 554 positive reactors (2.3%) and 2 274 doubtful reactors (3.4%). The size of the problem becomes apparent if these percentages are applied to the estimated number of 1 713 034 cattle present in the country, resulting m an estimate of at least 39 954 infected animals. (Inf. Epid. Sem. (Wash.), 1974, No. 12 and/et Ministry of Public PORTS DESIGNATED IN APPLICATION OF THE INTERNATIONAL HEALTH REGULATIONS Amendments to 1974 publication BRUCELLOSE C osta R ic a .
