POLIOMYELITIS — During 1973, only one case of poliomyelitis was reported from Belgium. The patient was the son of a foreign worker who had recently returned from holiday in his country of origin. The child was nine years of age and had no previous history of vaccination. Poliovirus type 1 was isolated from stool specimens. During the previous four years in Belgium, only three cases of poliomyelitis were notified, two in 1969 and one in 1972.1 Belgium’s mass vaccination programme began in 1938 using Salk vaccine, and was responsible for a marked reduction in the annual incidence of poliomyelitis and, subsequent to a second programme implemented in 1963 using Sabin vaccine, the disease has practically disappeared. POLIOMYÉLITE — En 1973, il a été signalé un seul cas de poliomyélite en Belgique. B s’agissait du fils d’un travailleur étranger qui venait de rentrer d’un congé dans son pays d’origine. Agé de neuf ans, l’enfant n’avait jamais été vacciné. Le virus de type 1 a été isolé dans les selles du malade. Au cours des quatre années précédentes, trois cas seulement avaient été enregistrés en Belgique: deux en 1969 et un en 1972.1 Lancé en 1958, le programme national de vaccination de masse par le vaccin Salk avait entraîné une réduction très marquée de l’incidence annuelle de la poliomyélite; grâce à un second pro gramme réalisé avec le vaccin Sabin en 1963, la maladie a prati quement disparu.
