PERSISTANCE O F MEASLES ANTIBODIES K e n y a . — In 1974 a study was undertaken to determine the immunity to measles of 1087 Kenyan children in the first year of life and the optimum age for vaccination. Sixty-eight o f the children who formed part o f this study were again examined for haemagglutination-inhibition (HI) antibodies to measles a t 2 Vi to 3 years o f age. The bleeding was done as part of a prospective serological study to confirm earlier findings o f the long duration of protection resulting from measles vaccination. The children could be divided according to their history of vaccination into the following four groups :

PERSISTANCE DES ANTICORPS ANTIROUGEOLEUX K enya.

Group 1 consisted of 23 children vaccinated before they harf reached their eighth Four-Week-Period (FWP) of life: — Thirteen did not show a demonstrable maternal antibody titre at the tim e o f vaccination but nonetheless nine failed to respond serologically to the vaccination and one had a transient low HI titre. The other three showed an adequate titre of H I antibodies after vaccination. O f the ten who failed to respond to vaccina tion three had measles before reaching their 12tb FW P and the other seven were revaccinated a t that age. Six of the seven revaccinated children gave a positive serological response while one remained serologically negative and developed measles soon after. — Eight children had maternal antibodies at the time of vaccination a n d only one responded to vaccination. The other seven showed a positive serological response to subsequent revaccination. — O ne child had had measles before reaching his seventh FWP, i.e. before vaccination. — O ne child was excluded from the study since information on HI titres a t the time o f vaccination is missing. Group 2 contained 26 children vaccinated at the age 8-11 FW P: — Twenty showed no demonstrable titres of maternal antibodies a t the time of vaccination. Eighteen responded serologically to vaccination. The two who failed later had infection with measles. — Two children showed maternal antibodies at the time of vaccina tion but nevertheless responded positively to vaccination. — F o u r children had had measles by the time of vaccination. Group 3 contained 15 children vaccinated at their 12th o r 13tb FW P: — Fourteen did not show maternal antibodies and 13 responded favourably to vaccination; one was not followed up further and was excluded from the study. — One child had had measles by the time o f vaccination. Relevé épidim. hebeL: N* 46 -1 7 nov. 1978

Group 4 contained four children that were not vaccinated: - One child had had measles by the ninth FWP and another by the 13th FWP. ■Two children were not followed up during the first year of the study and were not considered further.

— Ten (or 20%) had elevated H I antibody titres which however — Dix (soit 20%) avaient encore des titres élevés d ’anticorps IH, showed at least a four-fold decrease since the previous obser mais accusaient une diminution d ’au moins quatre fois par vation. rapport à l’observation précédente. — Three (6%) showed a more than four-fold increase in H I titre, — Trois (6%) présentaient une augmentation de plus de quatre fois presumably caused by measles infection. de leurs titres d ’anticorps IH, due probablement à l’infection morbilleuse. SURVEILLANCE OF MUMPS — A review of mumps epidemiology was carried out in Israel to assist decision makers concerning the inclusion of vaccina tion against mumps in the national immunization programme. Data from several sources from 1960 to 1977 revealed that epidemic waves occur every four to five years. The attack rate varied from around 270 cases per 10 000 inhabitants in 1975, which was a year with low incidence, to over 1 600 cases per 10 000 inhabitants in 1963, a peak year. The monthly distribution of cases notified from 1967 to 1976 showed an increase in incidence from February on wards and a decrease in July. Almost 60 % of all cases were report ed from February to June and almost 75 % of all cases were children in the age group 1-9, while children between ten and 14 years of age accounted for 16 %. N o significant sex difference could be detected in the various age groups for mumps cases reported between 1974 and 1976. Isra el.

H I Antibody Titres at the Ages o f 2 x / i to 3 Years o f Age For the reasons explained above only 64 of the 68 children shall be considered here. Of these 64, 50 were successfully vaccinated (37) or revaccinated (13): — Thirty-seven (or 74%) retained their H I titres or showed only minor variations not exceeding two-fold increases o r decreases.
