II. REPORT OF MEETINGS (MONDAY, 10 OCTOBER 2011) First meeting Chairperson: Mr Liow Tiong Lai (Malaysia) Later: Dr Adanan Yusof (Brunei Darussalam) Item 1. Opening of the session The Chairperson declared the sixty-second session of the Regional Committee for the Western Pacific open. Item 2. Address by the retiring Chairperson The retiring Chairperson spoke of some of the developments in health in the Region during his time in office and looked forward to the sixty-second session of the Regional Committee. He expressed his appreciation to the Committee for giving him the opportunity to serve as Chairperson of its sixty-first session, and thanked the WHO Secretariat for its support.

Item 5.
Adoption of the agenda The Committee was asked to consider an addition to the provisional agenda of a supplementary item on emergencies and disasters. The provisional agenda was adopted by the Regional Committee as amended. (WPR/RC62/1/Rev.1)
Item 6.
Address by the Director-General The Director-General spoke of global progress in pursuit of the health-related Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). She outlined current health challenges, both globally and in the Western Pacific Region, highlighting health concerns to be discussed in the sixty-second session of the Regional Committee. Interventions were made by representatives of the following Member States: Australia; China; Hong Kong (China); Japan; Malaysia; New Zealand; the Philippines; the Republic of Korea; Singapore; and Viet Nam.
Item 7.
Address by and Report of the Regional Director The Regional Director welcomed the Regional Committee to the newly renovated Conference Hall of the Regional Office and presented his report on the work of WHO in the Western Pacific Region for the period from 1 July 2010 to 30 June 2011. He updated the Committee on key achievements and remaining challenges in such areas as: progress towards the health-related MDGs; noncommunicable diseases; emergency and disaster preparedness and response; neglected diseases, including yaws, leprosy and lymphatic filariasis; polio; increased partner engagement; health systems strengthening; and progress in WHO reform in the Region.

Coordination of the work of the World Health Assembly, the Executive Board and the Regional Committee:
• WHA64.2 WHO reform and EB129(8) WHO reform for a healthy future The Director, Programme Management, gave a brief outline of the goals of the WHO programme of reform and the areas covered by the main proposals for financial and managerial changes. As requested in Decision EB129(8), he called on the Regional Committee to engage in strategic discussions regarding the WHO reform process in order to provide input to the special session of the Executive Board scheduled for November 2011. Interventions were made by representatives of the following Member States: Australia; China; France; Japan; and the Republic of Korea. The Director-General addressed the comments made by Member States and gave an overview of the discussions on the agenda item in the five other WHO regions.
