SURVEILLANCE OF SPECTINOMVCIN RESISTANT p-LACTAMASE PRODUCING NEISSERIA GONORRHOEAE U nited kingdom . — A spectinomycin resistant, p-lactamase pro ducing strain of Neisseria gonorrhoeae has ben isolated from the urethral discharge of a 27 year-old North African student attending St Mary’s Hospital, London W.2. The pre-treatment strain, at an inocu lum of 10s organisms, had an MIC of penicillin 8 jig/ml and specti nomycin 32 ug/ml. The patient was initially treated with ampicillin and probenecid and, after recall, firstly with 2g and then 4g spectinomycin. All post treatment isolates have an MIC of penicillin > 6 4 pg/ml and specti nomycin >512 pg/ml. (Continued page là)

R o y a u m e -u n i , — Une souche de Neisseria gonorrhoeae produisant de là p-lactamase résistante à la spectinomycine a été isolée à partir de l’écoulement urétral d’un étudiant nord-africain de 27 ans soigné au St-Mary’s Hospital, à Londres. Dans un inoculum de 105 microorganismes, la CIM de la souche était, avant traitement, de 8 jig/ml pour la pénicilline et de 32 pg/ml pour la spectinomycine. Le malade a été initialement traité à l’ampicilhne et au probénécide et, après rappel, d’abord a raison d e 2 puis 4 g de spectinomycine. Dans tous les isolements effectués après les traitement, on observe une CIM > 64 jig/ml pour la pénicilline et > 5 1 2 pg/mi pour la spectino mycine. (Suite page 16)

The patient’s contact was a female in England and he denies any sexual contact since the original organism was isolated. This is believed to be the first spectinomycin resistant strain isolated in the United Kingdom, although CDC (Atlanta) reported strains from the Philippines (CDR 81/19).
Le sujet contact était une femme rencontrée en Angleterre et le malade a déclaré n’avoir eu aucun rapport sexuel depuis le premier isolement du microorganisme incriminé. Il semble qu’il s’agisse de la première souche résistante à la spectinomycine isolée au RoyaumeUni; auparavant, le CDC d ’Atlanta avait signalé des souches prove nant des Philippines (CDR 81/19).
