SALMONELLA SURVEILLANCE

276 SURVEILLANCE DES SALMONELLA

Cameroon. — 1 In 1970, 117 strains of salmonella were isolated from man and examined at the Pasteur Institute of Yaounde. Of 336 haemocultures, 29 were positive and, among these, 20 were S . typhi, four S. Stanleyville and two S . enteriiidis. O f 2 250 stoolcultures, 82 were positive, and the following serotypes were found; 32 strains of S. typhi, 28 S , Stanleyville, seven S . typhi-murium, three S. Oakland, two S. enteriiidis and two S. paratyphi C. Of the 32 strains of S. typhi, 20 originated from Douala and five from Bafang. In addition, S. typhi-murium and S. paratyphi C were isolated from pus from a case of osteitis, and S , enteriiidis from pleural fluid. Twenty-two strains of S. typhi belonged to phage-type A Douala and 13 to phage-type C l. There were three isolates of a phagetype new for Cameroon, phage-type A, sub-group Dakar. Seven strains belonging to six serotypes were isolated from cold blooded animals, three of them for the fust time in Cameroon (including S . yaoundé, a new serotype which was added to the Kauffmann-White schema). Two o f these serotypes, S. nairobi and S. Stanleyville were also found in man. 1 See No. 3, 1971, p. 23.

Cameroun.
