INFLUENZA S e n e g a l (information dated 5 August 1972). — In Dakar, local outbreaks in the general population have been reported since the first half of July. Five strains of influenza virus B have been isolated. W o r l d I n il u e n z a C e n t r e , L o n d o n . — 1 The Centre has tested by haemagglutination-inhibition a number of strains o f virus A isolated in the autumn 1971 and in 1972 (four from Bulgaria, four from Austria, two from England, three from Johannesburg in South Africa, and one from Australia: A IV ictoriallp2). All were antigenically more closely related to the prototype A/Hong Kong/1/68 than to the variants A/Hong Kong/5/72 (identical to A/Hong KongJ 107/71) o r A/England/42/72. The strain A/Papua New G uineaP pl has also been examined in haemagglutination-inhibition tests, and is antigenically very close to the variant A/England/42/72 (widespread in Coonoor, India, during the summer 1971, and during the recent outbreaks in Singapore and Malaysia).
